  • One of my dad's favourites. I come back here periodically to remember the times we used to listen to Dire Straits together in his van, often times when I didn't want to go to school and he would bring me along to see closely what his work was really like (he was a farmer). We would go buy crops and tools in those mornings while blasting Deep Purple and Dire Straits on the radio. I miss him so much. Sadly cancer took him from us so prematurely. Dad, I know you still listen to this song and remember the brief period of life we spent together. Love you

THIS, is the greatest Rock Ballad ever realized❤❤

Really don't know how this man is not in the list of the best guitarists of all times.
  • Mark Knopfler is pure poetry! One of the best songwriters and guitarists ever. Perhaps too underrated.
  • It's a modern symphony... piano, guitars, bass and drums all toghether... it sounds like an orchestra.....and the final solo is one of the best in rock history. MASTERPIECE!

Mark Knopfler is probably the only guitarist I know who can pull off a 5min guitar solo that’s musically coherent and epic throughout the entirety of the solo ❤

When I was a rebellious teenager I listened to stuff that I was happy my parents hated. Then as I got a bit older I'd have longer conversations with my dad, who only listened to trad jazz and classical. I found myself wondering if we'd ever be able to talk about music. It never happened, as we were poles apart musically... until one day I was playing some Dire Straits. My dad said: 'That guitar playing is good. Could you tape a copy for me?'. We talked about music a lot after that. Thanks Mr Knopfler. Edit: I've just been talking to my Dad about all the lovely comments on this post. He's 86 now and doesn't know much about YouTube, but his reaction was 'Oh, really? Well I never!" I asked him if he remembered Dire Straits from all those years ago. "Oh yes," he replied. "Wonderful guitar player, terrific style. Sultans of Swing, wasn't it?" We then reminisced on the times he'd drive me to college, when we talked about Pink Floyd, Django Reinhardt, Dire Straits and Benny Goodman while listening to them on the car's cassette player. Good times. Precious conversations.

I have played this song endlessly over the decades a thousand times and it still gives me goose bumps, thank you mark.

Just want to say thank you Dire Straits for all the wonderful memories, the joy and the happiness you gave to me through your beautiful music. Been a fan since the late 70's.

A so good song writer, a so typical voice, an indisputed talentuous guitarist with a signature sound , an absolute legend!
  • Not the most known but definitely the best Dire Straits song!!!!
  • My dad died two weeks ago. We used to listen Dire Straits in the car and this song was always great. He drove me everywhere all my childhood and youth, learned me to drive, and when i got my driving license i got the key of his beloved car to drive alone in big cities withut any fear from him. He was a kind and great man who knew what good music meant. Bye dad.

Mark Knopfler makes normal and simple things sound amazingly interesting.
  • Any comment here is needless. This is simply incredible. Pure perfection.
  • @flyawaytodie
Every single second of this is an absolute masterpiece.
  • @nigeltooby7681
You think this is good? Listen to it on a proper HiFi system from the original vinyl - the dynamic range is astonishing. Goosebumps all the way through....
  • So many very long comments, but no words can't describe this "story". One word is enough. INCREDIBLE.
  • What people often miss about this song is the lack of verse-chorus structure.  It's all one very long verse, with no repeated music or lyrics.  Every single word, note, phrase, melody and riff is original and unique.   And precious.
