They began as a group of two brothers, Mark and David, who thought it might be fun to play with their friends. Mark’s influence helped them reach the top. He co-wrote or produced most of their major hits.

They didn’t face the struggles that some bands go through. There was no addiction to overcome or scandals to hide. Despite frequent changes to their members, there wasn’t much infighting in Dire Straights either.

The thing that brought them down was that they simply became too big. It was exhausting to play massive tours and come up with constant hits. The pressure was so great that it affected all the members’ family lives.

They took a hiatus until Mark eventually decided it was too much. The split was an amicable one because the rest of the band agreed.

Many of the members now have fruitful solo careers. Mark has a new studio where he loves to put out albums and collaborate with others.

That hasn’t stopped fans from clamoring for a reunion. They’d love to hear the classic Dire Straits style. Their former manager even gets offered large sums of money to make that happen.
The former frontman has been particularly vocal about it. He’s admitted he loved that time in his life, but he’s also shared his opinions about whether a reunion is a smart idea or even possible.

Saw them in Southern California in the 90s and left the concert thinking "these guys are even better live" which isn't always the case with great bands. Best wishes to all the band members for your truly inspirational music.

The Sultans of Swing from Alchemy Live is the best piece of live music you will ever see and hear, it is truly epic and flawless.

Cause they are 70 in the shade. That’s why. Never in my life have I witnessed people asking multi millionaire 70 + year olds when they are going back to work. We don’t live forever people. Remember old age and death? It still exists.

Sometimes, it's just better to leave something amazing where it is. Dire Straits body of work is up there with the very best. One of the best bands of all time and that is a fact.

Best ever guitarist. You know who you are listening to with just ONE sustained note.
  • Dire Straits my favorite band of all time. As a guitar player, Mark is in my top 3 favorites with Hendrix & Santana. Dire Straits live Christchurch NZ March 1986 was musically the finest of many gigs ive been to. An amazing night & only $25. Thanks for the video

Down To The Waterline and Six Blade Knife are two of my favorites. They became MTV darlings after that.

I’ve been in the same band for 23years. We still have the same, original lineup. I am closer to my band brothers than my own family. It’s certainly a unique relationship.
  • I love Mark Knopfler,he has never done a bad album for me since 1978 and I look forward to his next release

Dire Straits is absolutely one of my favorite bands. I loved them since 9th grade when Sultans of Swing first hit the airways and I was in awe of the sheer talent, unique sound and control the band had. In America, he wins the most underrated guitarist. Maybe now that new good rock bands are practically nonexistent and the "classic" rockers are getting more attention. Also missed in this video is they played LIVE AID when their mega hit CD Brothers In Arms was released. Perfect Timing. And correction for the video- Money For Nothing is on this CD. I am looking forward to seeing Mark Knopler if really comes to Philadelphia atea again. It seems he keeps his tours lately mostly in the UK. I am now putting on my Making Movies CD, now that I am craving Dire Straits. Another underrated cd that is brilliant!

It must be remembered that Jack Sonni, who joined Dire Straits around the time of the Brothers in Arms album, passed away last year.
  • This band is one of my favorite childhood memories. I’m an even bigger fan now ❤️💯

Knopflers first solo album , Golden Heart is fantastic. Bought that the day it was released. Still have it. Then "A Night in London" was released shortly after which I practically wore out my VHS copy I bought new.

Mark is vastly underrated. His sound is so unique that I can spot it in literally seconds. One of the greatest of his generation.
