📣 Open comment to the friend who inspired this series 📣 Dear V, Here's me saying "Oh so Michael is the comic relief" and then realising the entire show is a comic relief hahaha Love, Babs

you should try to listen to the original 2015 album, the squip's voice and actor is less "surfer dude" and is actually kinda antagonizing and abusive. i honestly like the soundtrack from before, the vocals are a better and i prefer the actors. i think the major problem i have with the new album is that they try too hard to make everything more mainstream or funny. also, michael in the bathroom is waaaaay more emotional in the old album. but yes, please take a listen!
  • Rich didn't die in the fire he just went to the hospital. The song is about gossip and social media and I think it's actually very interesting. Like Chloe for example hears the news from Jenna who wasn't even there at the time but then says that she saw everything and when the news spread you can see everyone has there own version about his being dead or gay when there isn't actually anything that suggests that (even though at the end it turns out the character is actually bi). You also have everyone being all "sympathetic" towards him on social media and like changing their profile picture and saying that they understand what he went through when they don't know and don't actually really care.

Basically- Michael saved Everyone. He used mountain dew red and saved Everyone. Rich is okay- he just got really wasted and set his house on fire.

SQUIP stands for "Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor" eventhough it definetly sounds like something from Spongebob
  • @Justice237
This vocal glitches in The Play weren't edited - Will Roland was actually making those noises every performance! Also, thanks for listening to the Broadway album! Most people don't give it a chance, but it deserves all the recognition because Loser Geek Whatever is the best song in the show and it has the objectively better Halloween and Smartphone Hour
  • @brynnagrace-
In "do you wanna hang" the girl singing is dressed as a baby for halloween

OK - character rundown! Jeremy is the protagonist - obviously. Most things happen to him, he is the second character to get a Squip. Michael - Michael in the Bathroom, Two Player Game, the best friend character. He's considered by the Squip to be 'a bad link to old Jeremy', it convinces him to cut Michael off (Loser, Geek, Whatever). He does actually, however, end up saving the show. Squip - Keanu Reeves, I guess. Be More Chill P.1, P.1, The Pitiful Children. Literally tries to take over everyone's mind. Christine - the love interest. (an absolute sweetheart - please listen to her songs!). I Love Play Rehearsal, Guy That I'd Kinda Be Into. She seems interested in Jeremy only as a friend, and likes Jake. The driving force for Jeremy getting a Squip. Rich - the first dude to get a Squip. He's Jeremy's bully, and The Squip Song is him essentially trying to convince Jeremy to buy one off him (he goes and buys it from someone else). He goes nuts and sets the fire talked about in Smartphone Hour. He does not die. Jake - the most popular dude in school. Upgrade, Halloween (it was his house). He previously had a thing with Chloe, who is still very attached to him, and has now moved onto Christine. He turns out to be a douche, and breaks both legs in the Halloween fire. Brooke - Do You Wanna Ride?, Smartphone Hour (verse 3). Best friend to Chloe, likes Jeremy, who is convinced to use her to climb the social ladder. They feature in Upgrade together, alongside Christine and Jake. Absolute cutie. Jenna - the 'gossip girl'. Smartphone Hour (first verse, lead), also in The Pitiful Children. She gets ignored. The third character to recieve a Squip upon being told that it'll help her be accepted. Chloe - Brooke's jealous best friend, the most popular girl in school. Smartphone Hour (second verse), Do You Wanna Hang? - where she essentially forces herself onto Jeremy while the Squip doesn't let him reject her. She was in the backing of Do You Wanna Ride, and takes lead here. Do with that what you will. Jeremy's dad, Mr Heere - dysfunctional father. The Pants Song - about him pulling himself together enough to help his son. Does not wear trousers onstage until this number. Mr Reyes - the drama teacher in charge of the school play. Kinda crappy.

oof you're listening to the broadwy recording... i know a lot of people like i guess, but i just can't hear it. i really prefer the older cast recording from 2015. i'm going to try to watch the video without raging because of the music. btw i really like your backround
  • @Denf0
Aww, I don't mind the video being longer if it means you don't skip songs. I Love Play Rehearsal is really funny and gives you a lot of insight on Christine's character and The Pants Song is the same for Jeremy's dad (not sure if you listened to them and just didn't include the footage or skipped over them entirely). I think people answered most of your questions - Rich was the one singing The Squip Song so he was the first person in the school to get "Squipped." His Squip saw Jeremy and decided he was vulnerable enough to be controlled, so it had Rich tell him to get one as well. Bit of background on The Smartphone Hour, during Halloween Rich was running around a bit crazed between lyrics asking everyone if they had any Mountain Dew Red (because Squip) and getting more and more desperate until the end when he says if he can't deactivate it then he'd just burn the house down with himself inside it. He didn't actually die, but he did get hospitalized and Jake broke both of his legs jumping out a window. The actual Smartphone Hour song is just commentary on how high school students are mostly performative when it comes to showing that they care when something bad happens, it's just to make themselves look good rather than actually caring. Loser, Geek, or Whatever ends up with Jeremy letting the Squip completely block Michael from his vision/hearing because hanging out with him isn't 'cool'. When Jeremy's at the Halloween party the Squip tells him to drink alcohol to fit in, but that temporarily deactivates the Squip which is when Michael confronts him in the bathroom but Jeremy's already brainwashed so he calls Michael a loser and walks out, prompting Michael in the Bathroom. Also fun fact, whenever multiple people with Squips come in contact with each other, the Squip will say "up up down down left right a" in order to sync them up - this is a reference to one of the first ever cheat codes in video games called the Konami Code, a sequence of inputs you could do in the pause menu of some early NES games to obtain all available power-ups for free.
  • I love Will Roland Will Roland is serotonin Edit: I love that the Broadway cast is getting love I love them so much HHHHH Aaanndd edit 2: uhhh there are full bootlegs online. just saying
  • @kieransears4904
A lot happens between songs in Act 2, so it can be extremely difficult to follow. Understandable.
  • @josiekamens5757
The original soundtrack is much much better also just as a suggestion

Michael: having a panic attack Barbara: dances at his sad
  • @curioppyty
so happy it was the Broadway version. it needs more love. will rolland as jeremy is the best i don't even care. his voice cracks are perfect for the character, he actually sounds like a teenager. the main reason people hate on it so much is bc they're used to the two rivers version and that's fine, but i think the Broadway version is just as good and the "oh, he's the comedic relief" about michael made me side-eys michael in the bathroom so hard haha
  • @coletrudell
"The plot was simple... vanilla" EXCUSE YOU VERY MUCH, how many musicals have you seen with a supercomputer in pill form that directs your behavior? 😆
  • @paluna4785
I know I am late, but I just found your channel and am now binging all the videos xD I absolutly love that you listened to the Broadway version without knowing the original, because everybody else is just biased when they listen to the new album. For my part. I actually knew the original version before listening to the Broadway version and totally loved it. When the new version came out I was biased too, because why would the Squip sound like a weird surfer dude? But I gave it a chance and am now even more in love with the Broadway version, because... 1) Michael is even softer (we need to protect him) 2) Will Roland as Jeremy is impresive (especially since I learned the song Loser, Geek or Whatever was somewhat written because of him (If my friend told me that correctly, so don't Quote me on that..)) 3) Tiffany Mann (Jenna Rolan) is killing it! 4) The added distorted voice in the background gave me goosebumps when I heard it for the first time and 5) Jason Tam (the Squip) nailed the young Keanu Reeves voice and needs to get more appreciation for that. Also his dance skills!! So yeah, I love the Broadway version... Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk (Ps: Sorry, if there are any language mistakes, english isn't my native language so please correct me^^)
