DĂa de los muertos is a celebration from Mexico when families gather to honor the memory of deceased loved ones from Oct. 31st - Nov. 2nd.
Every year, we set up these beautiful altars to guide our loved ones home and we welcome them with offerings such as their favorite foods, water, even alcohol!

Cempasuchil:
Dia de los muertos is recognized by it’s beautiful yellow and orange hues of marigold flower, or also known as cempasuchil. The reason we use these flowers is because their strong scent and bright colors help guide the spirits to their altars.

Ofrenda Levels:
Ofrendas can be made of several levels. In this case I made mine of two that represent the the earth and the sky.

But the most common Is a 7 level ofrenda. The seven levels represent the seven destinations that a soul must cross to be able to rest eternally.

Typical foods:
As well as the deceased's favorite food, altars usually contain traditional Day of the Dead food items such as pan de muerto, pumpkins, sugar cane, jicama and oranges - seasonal foods.

Salt:
Salt is usually placed on a plate and stops the souls of the deceased from being corrupted by earthly temptations

I’m a 13 year old girl, my mom passed when I was 9 and she was hispanic. I always felt like I was going to intrude on a culture that isn’t exactly mine so I have never made and ofrenda. But recently my dad has remarried and I felt like I wanted to be closer or at least recognize my mom in a way so I’m going to make her an altar in my room.

I’m Mexican but from Texas, so we didn’t celebrate most Mexican traditions as we should’ve growing up.. thanks for educating, I plan to celebrate from this year on & pass the traditions on to my kids 🧡

My parents never talked to me about ofrendas and noone makes them in my family and Im mexican american. I never been to mexico I was born in America. I been wanting to make a oftenda for years but didnt know much about it until I saw your video today. Now I want to make one and carry on the tradition so my daughter can learn also :)
  • Last night as I watched this, the stories you shared about your grandpa made me smile and it made me long for my grandpa. When I went to bed I dreamt that I made an ofrenda (which i have never made by the way 😄) and in my dream he came back. I could see his face and even his eyes so clearly (which is very rare in dreams.) It’s the first time i’ve ever dreamt of him since he passed 4 years ago. I just thought I’d come back here and say thank you. đŸ™đŸ»
  • I'm puertorican and we celebrate DĂa de los Muertos visiting the cemetery and placing flowers on their relatives graves. I love how people celebrate this tradition in Mexico.
  • It looks so beautiful ♡ I am going to try to make my 1st one this year. I am half mexican and trying to connect with our culture more

I lost three of my grandparents within the last year. In my high school Spanish classes we studied Dia de los Muertos and celebrated in class. I felt inspired to do something this year. Thank you so much for this video.

I'm not latina but since losing my father 4 years ago, I celebrate every year. Setting up the ofrenda makes me feel so connected to them and I feel proud to honor them for the day. Dio de los muertos (Nov 1st) is also my birthday, coincidentally.

Your ofrenda looks so beautiful! I am not Mexican but I love this tradition and I am definitely putting up an altar this year. Unfortunately, I can't find cempasĂșchil in the UK, so I will have to make them with orange tissue paper. I also made a pan de muerto las year and it was delicious! It was hard to make though, it took me a whole day!! worth it :-)
  • Your altar looks so beautiful!! Here in Brazil we commonly go to the cemetery and take flowers and candles to the graves of our relatives, those who cannot light candles at home

My boyfriend is Mexican and we have been talking about putting up one for years and I think this year I’m gonna set one up for us as a surprise for him.
  • we never celebrated day of the dead even though i'm biracial and since my mother passed away we decided that she would have loved this tradition. she was white but adored day of the dead decorations and hispanic culture. we didn't know where to start and i'm so happy to say that we are going to!! thank you so much for giving us this to go off of!
  • Wow this is beautiful 😍 I just the movie “coco” and it was such an amazing movie! I love the Mexican tradition and how you honour your loved one. Makes me feel like a proud Mexican (even though I’m African lol) Love and peace xx
