It's honestly scarier having Herobrine's origin lie in an actual bug than from a creepypasta. Originating from within the game with real user encounters is completely different from originating from just a scary story.

I remember being scared of Herobrine as a child, 6 years later, This video was posted and brought my memories back. I can't believe the community is still discovering new things.
  • @sledgedragon2677
It would be terrifying if instead of saying "removed herobrine", it said "added herobrine" in a new update.
  • @codelyoko363
I only ever knew about the Herobrine as we know him today, but hearing about how he originally started as two white eyes in the darkness suggests to me that he very much likely started out as some rendering bug. It doesn't surprise me how it soon turned into a creepypasta considering the atmosphere that Minecraft had back then.

I never heard of "White Eyes" before, but between the two, I would find White Eyes more troublesome than Herobrine. A mob that randomly digs tunnels & stares at you isn't really a problem, but a mob that destroys your light sources while you're caving is setting you up for other mobs to attack you on your way back to the surface.

Two different things to consider. There was a glitch in the indev and alpha builds that would replace the skin of some mobs with the player standard skin There were also problems with torches suddenly vanishing world generation when a player updated their world. These problems however were solved or mostly well before the official release however. Sometimes when they were solving a problem with skin or texture rendering they would refer to it as removing herobrine and notch later said so himself.

This video is so high-quality. The music, the editing, and the custom White Eyes model really made it spooky. I remember when we all used to be so scared of Herobrine, when we look back on it, it seems silly, but this video brought it all back.

Ain't nobody gonna talk about 13 years later and disc thirteen, its an interesting coincidence
  • @fosminclorin
It's interesting to know that Herobrine originates from a real bug in a way
  • @p1ratesail0r
Im so glad to see herobrine becoming relevant again. I like seeing him come to life once more, especially because of all the new mods and datapacks that can cause him to actually terrorize you

I think one of the most interesting aspects of stories like this is the fact that the original creators are just entirely unknown. And that applies to any and all online myths, creepypasta, etc. In an age where everything exists forever on the internet, it's kind of wild to think that those who were once so heavily involved in the community that they inspired an entire movement that is an integral part of the game's history, just.. don't know what they did? Like, what are they doing now? Were they just young kids having fun, and when life caught up with them, they moved on from it all and never happened to look back? Did they live under circumstances were one day they were just unable to have computer/internet access? Did they just stop caring? It's all so interesting. You would think by now we would have dozens of people claiming to be these users. But so far, not a peep. The other possibility is that they've kept their silence all these years in dedication to the bit. I which case, mad props to that determination. Instead of claiming their 15 minutes of fame, they're allowing an internet legend to live on in mystery and, in essence, keeping it alive. I seriously respect that kind of commitment. I do hope they come forward some day. It's still a part of Minecraft history, and digging into the origins of these legends is still interesting. I think it okay for them to make themselves known at this point and tell their stories, now that it's the people themselves asking them to. oh and i guess the third possibility is that they are dead, but that isnt nearly as fun to wonder about
  • @matthew7910
The fact that people say he didn’t exist and was never found in the code makes me question my sanity because I swear I saw him twice on the Xbox 360 version
  • Interesting note here: During the Beta 1.8 Adventure Update's development, before having green eyes, enderman had white eyes, so they were originally Notch's way to add "White Eyes" into the game, combining how they are black and blend in with dark caves and how they could take and place every single block in the game, they would have been very interesting
  • @doughboywhine
Honestly White Eyes actually sounds like it could be a very cool mini boss-type mob. It inhabits random caves in world gen, disables nearby mob spawning, and is only tangible in the dark. You would have to take note of how strange your cave is being and then remove any torches you have placed to find and fight it.

Ain’t no way my grown ass is still scared
  • It's 2024 and been playing on different bedrock and java servers. Almost no one even mentions "Herobrine" or has a herobrine name anymore. Gosh I miss those 2014 days where in every suspicious activity leads to people thinking that Herobrine is in your world or hacking in the server. Good times.
  • @ethanmoon3925
I think the true origin of Herobrine/ white eyes is the eerie loneliness of early Minecraft. People would rather imagine a monster than deal with that much emptiness.
  • @justas423
As someone into theology/anthropology, it's neat how the creation of Herobrine parallels the development of many gods and myths. Unclear original creators whose origins can only be inferred via their retellings create a prototypical version of the myth that people know now. That myth then gets retold and used as inspiration for another myth that gets popular and ends up sticking in the public conscious because all of its lore is way, WAY better preserved.
  • @Kodeb8
Ngl, that white eyes story is a lot creepier than the more famous herobrine story. 11 year old me would be shitting his pants if he had heard it back then.
